I've been desperately looking for the components to build 3 point clip but so far with no luck. It's either the shipping costs are completely outrageous or I'd have make an order minimum value of at least 50 euros...Kind of funny that ordering from certain Finnish companies has pretty much the same shipping costs as if I'd order from Germany. And don't have the need to order IR-LEDs and resistors with total amount of 50 euros.

All I need is a few IR-LEDs and the same amount of resistors so my question is, where can I order these parts with REASONABLE price?

I do not live in Finnland but I think there are some elektrotechnik shops there.
Order from the internet is unnecessary.

If You do not know where to find this kind of shops, ask a TV or Radio serviceman.

Any good electronic component shop will stock standard 5mm IR leds, these normally have a narrow viewing angle, too narrow for Freetrack, but all you need to do is sand down the lens tips to turn them into wide angle leds, perfect for Freetrack.

Yeah, I send him email about that sometime ago but he said that he is going to be sometime away and didn't have the time to build these clips for the time being. Told me me to get back in two weeks but looks like I can't wait for that long  :p

The nearest electrotechnic shop is about 100km away so the internet is pretty much the only option

But I have managed to found a couple of these kind of shops from the internet. But yet again, the shipping costs for a couple components are about 15 euros! And both of these are Finnish shops...

That's insane. RS Components in Australia has free delivery, irrespective of order quantity, so a few leds can be sent from one side of Australia to the other for free.

I bought my LEDs and resistors from http://www.led1.de/shop/
They have free shipping for anyone in Europe.

Heh, I'm not not even shocked! Guess I'm just too used to these Finnish rip-off postal fees. I know 15 euros isn't that much but it's a matter of principle. I ain't sure as hell paying 15 euros shipping for something you can just send in a small letter almost for free!

Well, now I know where I'll order the components I need in the future. Just the amount of LEDs they have is insane. Thank you very much! :)

Now the only problem is which LEDs to order... :p

PS. There really should be a thread about these shops where to order the right components

I got this one. The only thing i recommend is to sand them down a bit, so that the Beam angle is wider.

Hello Mdds

There's already a thread here (thx babasior) :
Led providers

Unfortunately , its in french, but you can still pick some informations in it and feed google translator with it

About Led1.de , they only have 1 IR led model (AFAIK) :
LED1.DE IR LED

Their beam angle is too narrow (about 20°) but as kestrel said earlier, this can be easily changed by sanding the leds.
Once this is done , they'll perfectly fit our needs.

I personnally sanded my leds flat using a dremel tool (I had noname narrow beam Ir leds) and they now have a beam of more than 90° wide.

The only drawback if you sand your leds yourself is they'll loose beam strength, so you'll perhaps need to mod your webcam (remove the IR filter) to increase IR sensitivity.

You'll have to try and find, thats led and webcam dependant.

Ok, thanks you guys for helping me out. Those LEDs were excatly what I was thinking about to order but wanted a confirmation

Yeah, the angle is pretty bad but I just have to sand them. Let's just hope I don't have to start fiddling around with the IR-filter of my webcam but it's relatively easy to remove so it doesn't really matter that much

Thank you all for helping me out! :)

I ordered 10 of the IR LEDS and 10 of the wide angle red. As I mentioned before they sell resistors and also heat shrink tube (if you want to make your job look neat) :)

Brightness would be comparable to 'proper' wide angle leds.
