I'm curious about this as well. My friend and I were originally going to try something like this out, as we're going to be using the headtracking for a R/C helicopter simulator so that we can get a better feel when we're practicing w/ the sim. I think one big problem w/ VR headsets is that you get motion sickness when using them. I'm curious if that is still a problem when movements aren't mapped 1:1.

well ive done research on this as i was thinking of building a vr headset with small lcd screens and such
userly u would need to buy an expensive vr headset to get a good res for games and u will find most of the good vr headsets have built in headtracking.
although im not sure about 6dof
its easy to c it would work with freetrack , all u would have to do is mount the led's on the vr headset and adjust the sensitivity right to allow your head more movment , the only problem realy is if u were to say look over your shoulder the led's wouldnt be seen by the camera.

Freetrack being quite an open platform, if such a VR helmet was
affordable, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone come up with
some sort of «6 LEDs cap» coupled with 3 webcams that would
let you freely move and turn around :-)
