I think we all agree that the smoothest and quickest reaction combo for Free-Track is the currently Wii-Remote with its 100FPS.
However it is Bluetooth connected and having always a slight delay (unlike the hatd Track-IR). Now i found out that there is a device called PS3 Eye for the Playstation. This thing makes usually in 320x240 128FPS, with new drivers even 150FPS are possible. It has another advantages over the Wii-Mote: - Cable connected (no bluetooth lag!) with USB2 - Energy comes also over USB2 - Own Standfeet - Extremely sensitive to IR when IR-Filter removed. Disadvantage: - Is color (but hopefully can be changed). Now the driver manufacturer (alex popovich) has made a PS3 Eye SDK public for better integration by other software, would be good for free-track i think! Read here: http://alexpopovich.wordpress.com/2008/10/20/ps3eye-camera-sdk-for-use-in-your-own-applications/ If the Freetrack Programmers together with the driver guy can manage it to send in Black-White, im sure this cam can be the new best cam for Freetrack available! Can Free-Track optimized for this great camera? |

8bit color (monochrome) would be nice but it looks like 16bit color is the lowest it can go.

Hi Zaphod (i know you from Arma, are you "the" zahhod :p), thats why i written that Free-Track could work together with Alex Popovich as he is the driver guru for this device and he also mentioned that you could mod the firmware. So i think there are possibilites and because of the high FPS of this Device, its worth to looking more into it IMHO. |

When I try to use my PSeye camera right now with Alex's drivers Freetrack just stalls. Is this what is happening to everyone? Or am I doing something wrong?

Can you a little bit more into detail? Which drivers you mean and where to get them? What modifications you did to you PS3 Eye? How is it working, mind to share a video of overall responsiveness and smoothness? What resolution you use? |

Isn't the Ps3 Eyetoy very CPU intensive at high frame rates?

Not at all. It works fine at higher frame rates.
Also, please more support for the PS3 eye! It's a great cheap solution and can double as an excellent webcam with powerful microphones AND a head tracking cam.

Wouldn't the PS3 eye not work with Freetrack anymore? On the webcam compatibility page it says "Note: The new USB Video Class (UVC) webcam standard uses YUYV (YUY2) which is not currently supported by FreeTrack.". On the NUI group forum for PS3 eye. It mentions "The camera currently streams video in YUYV format, therefore each frame is 640*480*2 bytes." Doesn't that mean it's already bust?

Apparently not. It seems to work here. I do think it could use more support as it seems a good solution with it's high FPS and high res capture.

So whats the problem? Does freetrack HAVE to track in monochromatic? Does it work normally? I'm thinking about buying a PS3 eye for my PS3 AND for freetrack! |

I also tried the PS3 eye (with the IR filter in it) and it didn't track my IR lights.
it seems to be hard removing the IR filter, see these (two) video's: Sony PS3 Eye IR-filter removal 1/2 + Sony PS3 Eye IR-filter removal 2/2 If you have one try it, but if you have to buy it ...... you better buy a Wiimote! |

The problem is that it only works with one old driver, which is reported as a trojan. It also only works with 640x480 at 30 or 60 fps. High res+high fps = lower image quality. There are newer drivers around, the dev added a full SDK and a whole lot of other bits and pieces(directshow) that could aid implementation.
I didn't remove the IR filter, but instead used a visible light filter only(just cut up a floppy and attached it infront of the lense) and it works just fine. here's my setup: And here's how the IR leds show up.

What IR leds did you use? |

ALSO can I use the new drivers or does freetrack not work with the latest drivers? If not, is it because of freetrack or the drivers?
