Hi all,
Started flying in Battleground Europe (WWIIOnline) a week or so back and as a newb to flightsims I had very hard times with situational awareness. Was trying to look around with mouse and POV, but although mouse was slightly better it was still awkward and using up a whole hand.
In search for something better I found out about TrackIR and googling that I ended up here. After some reading I first dismissed it, because to much expenses with camera and dongle + time and not knowing if it would work made me doubt the concept. After seeing some guy using a wiimote on Youtube I realised I already had the cam
And I also remembered an old Bluetooth dongle tucked away in a drawer for a dead MS-mouse.
So yesterday I decided to go for it and bought 940nm IR-leds at the local store (somewhat of a Swedish Radio Shack equivalent) and pimped out a baseball cap. Completed the cap yesterday and started fiddling around with Freetrack today. First off I was amazed that it worked but it didn't work that great. Just couldn't get the movement smooth and the rotation about both X and Y was far too small. The problem was that I had only tinkered with the sliders in the Global settings and the curves, but once I clicked the "1" but under Profile setting and tweaking the smoothing and averaging there it all fell into place. It is teh awesome! I have about 96-99 fps and about 40-50 JPS (even when threshold is almost maxed out). Was a little concerned with the high JPS, but with high smoothing and some averaging turning around in the cockpit is very smooth and not jittery at all.
Using freetrack in Battleground Europe using mouselook works like a charm in cockpit, but not as much as infantry, but I couldn't care less. Native BE support would be nice, but it's just great as it is.
Thank you all! Developers and forum monkeys alike! Very glad I didn't fork out the money for the TrackIR, although that would easily be worth the money if Freetrack wasn't around
