I agree kestrel (in fact , a bit less because of artisanal sanding, but the difference is so tiny, we dont need to take care of it).
What i was thinking about is more most of us are used to the SFH485P which are wide angle high power leds. One could find a sanded 'standard' ir led somewhat dim, compared to sfh485p. cya |

Yeah, at first I considered ordering that heat shrink tube but because I work at the small local metal workshop, think I'm gonna build something cooler for myself |

I am using an old 2.5mm welding rod with the coating stripped off.
The only component I am having problems locating in the UK or EU is a clip suitable for attaching to my headset. |

Hello WillEyedOney, Mdds
@WillEyedOney : Since you said : "attaching to my headset" , i suppose you go for a 3point Clip. I built a 3point clip for a friend, and used the following to fasten it on the headset : - I used a little piece of an old PCB (printed circuit board) as support, and glued the assembly on it using epoxy glue (that doesn't move anymore ) - I put a piece of velcro strap on the other side of the PCB and another on the headset side. This way , the friend can unmount it or adjust the assembly position as often as he wants. He reported this kind of support worked very well. You can find some shots of this setup in this thread Cya. |

Wow! There's some very nice setups there. I had completely missed that because I don't check the french forums here. My french is limited only to a few words so... But checking that thread gave me a few new ideas for my setup. Just have to decide am I gonna make 3 point clip or 3 point cap version... Or I could make both! |

When you say that you sanded the LEDs, did you just roughen up the ends or did you make them flat and if flat, were they flat across the full 5mm?

Hello WillEyedOney
I personnally sanded them totally flat across the 5mm using a dremel tool. They look like a kinda cheap SFH485 |

Thanks tristan, I will file mine off across the width of the LED. I guess you did not polish the tops after you ground them off?
