Hi, I've been hearing alot about this software and the homemade tracking systems people have been building, and I'm really excited to try this out for myself. I had a couple of questions before I go and buy a webcam and gut it.

First, I would prefer to make a headset with reflectors, not led's, but I haven't been able to find any webcams with led's attached to them. I was wondering if anyone knows stores in the Toronto area that sell webcams with leds. I am also willing to wire some led's to the webcam itself, but I don't have much knowledge in electronics (I can solder just fine, but I wouldn't know where to connect the led's and what the effects would be on voltage or current in the webcam).

Another question: what material do you make the reflectors from? Is aluminum foil sufficient, or should it be more mirror-like?

Thanks for making it this far through the post. I appreciate any input.

Hi Booze ! :)

You know, there are no webcams which have LEDs attached to them, or I mean, which are ok to do reflective tracking with FreeTrack. You'll have to put the IR leds by yourself ^^ . I'm not the one who is going to help you with electronics, but here, there are some guys who would be sort of a help ;) !

Besides, the reflectors are often done with some reflective tape, the one that you can see on the jackets of the guys who works close to the road by night ^^ ! Have a searsh with the keywords "reflective tape" through Google and I guess you might find what I mean ^^ ...

Have a nice day ! :)

I use a webcam with built-in IR leds that works great with Free-Track.  I guess the make/model is "Emprex G40."  Here're specs from the brand's website: Link

I paid USD $25 to a Fry's Electronics store in Burbank, CA for it about 2 months ago.

This cheap little thing works very well with Free-Track as both a cam and an IR light source.  I use the reflector hat clip that came with a retail TrackIR product.

To any who look at this camera, be aware: it has only RGB 24 compression and I get rates of jitter in the mid 20s when Free-Track is not minimized.  With those caveats having been put forth, I do recommend this setup wholeheartedly.  It tracks flawlessly at an unwavering 27fps in 640x480, with near 0% cpu load.

Occasionally I use a visible light filter (a bit of floppy disk) but I rarely need it.

Hi again,

Thanks alot for the feedback. I was thinking of buying a regular webcam and maybe attaching some leds myself to the thing. I have been to a number of stores locally, and I haven't been able to find an led-enabled camera. I personally don't want to order a webcam over the net. Would anyone know how I could maybe solder on a couple of leds to the camera's circuit? I'm thinking of getting a logitech quickcam messenger or something similar, since it's cheap. Thanks again.
