Alright, so yesterday I started my adventure and bought all the components I thought I would need, and devised a plan to make a 3 point clip.
That didn't turn out so well. My second attempt today, I bought some more components and created a 3 point hat. So far, so good. The hat for the most part, functions the way its supposed to. I think I need to sand the LED's some more, and extend them further out from the hat so the light isn't blocked or directed away from the camera. I'm still having a few issues at the moment. I'll list them off here along with some extra information regarding my setup. The first issue is that my framerate can't get near 30. I get about 20, but its not tracking well enough. I've played around with alot of the settings and I can get it running "ok'ish" so that its usable in-game but only if I keep my movements slow and precise. The other issue I'm having is quite major. Freetrack keeps crashing to the desktop, and in one instance has actually blue-screened and reset my computer. For the life of me I can't figure out the cause of this. I've got all external applications that aren't required closed, and no other applications using the webcam open (that I'm aware of). My setup is as follows: 3 point hat using a series circuit. 1.2v 5mm IR LED's, 270 ohm resistor, on - off switch, 9v battery. Windows XP Pro turion tl52 processor 1GB ram Geforce GO 7600 ------------------------------------ Microsoft VX-1000 webcam USB\VID_045E&PID_00F7&MI_00\6&FD188A1&0&0000 and driver version: 5.12.1.49 (IR filter removed, 3 layers of un-developed film over outside lense) (Yes, I'm running on a laptop. it runs all my games fine however). ------------------------------------- A long post, I know. But hopefully it covers all the information required and if not just ask and I'll happily provide. cheers, Newo |

Framerate
http://www.free-track.net/english/hardware/webcam.php#Microsoft It seems there is a little piece of sotfware (for your web-cam) that enables a button, You have to use to get higher FPS. Crashing of Free-Track -do you get NAN errors (i do) -it seems to Lock/crash FT, when you move 1-or more diodes out of the Cam's field of view. http://forum.free-track.net/index.php?showtopic=422&page=2 It IS SOLVED and will be in the next FT realase, MAN do i ADMIRE THE FREE-TRACK TEAM. Dark room vs Digital media "3 layers of un-developed film over outside lense" is that many layers realy needed, maybe you have to set FT's Treashold on a to high setting, to compensate for the lack of light (but on this i could be wrong). have you tried out the FLOPPY DISK (media, the disk material) -i use that myself. BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH, impressive REboot or BOOT (as in kick) your PC the Best to you, from a Standard RED-Diode user.
support FREETRACK developers, the do it FREE for you -HELP them/yourself help others.
-another fun DIY thing to do, works with Free-Track too, HAVE A LOOK |

I have tried enable button. the drivers somehow force the auto-exposure back to 24 (which still has a big effect on the FPS).
Also, I don't think the crashing issue is to do with the diodes going outside the camera's field of view because sometimes I'll be sitting there with the software open just checking the tracking to see if its going smoothly and then it will just crash. I'm not sure what you mean by NAN error, I just get the typical (such and such needed to close, send error report thing that xp throws at you) As for the floppy disk thing, I tried that first before the photo film. I noticed that it cuts out far too much light that even my IR LED's had trouble getting through. (They could, but the dots were quite small and hard to track) So I messed around a bit and found that 3 layers of photo film worked best to keep out all un-wanted light while still letting the LED's through enough. Unless my IR LED's aren't strong enough or something. How far away do you guys sit your camera in front of you? (metric terms here please I don't work with imperial). If I sit roughly half a meter away from the camera, it works perfectly fine, when I move a meter away, it still tracks fine. If I move further away than a meter the dots split up too much that it has trouble tracking (I've messed around with the threshold alot and these are the best results I could come up with). |

After some more testing, still having much the same issues as before.
I did some testing with no film covering the camera (bad idea far too much outside light). A single layer of photo film (cuts almost all the outside light out but sometimes a little gets through. 2 layers of film was the best, 3 layers made little to no difference from 2 layers. Still getting software crashes though, and low frame rate. I've sanded down my LED's quite alot, and they do look pretty flat to me, but somehow when I turn my head i loose tracking due to the dots breaking up and the light fading. |

I'm still having all of these issues, however I believe the framerate could now be limited by the fact that my webcam for some reason isn't using USB 2.0
I've done some digging and the only device that seems to want to use USB 2.0 is my iPod Touch. Even my razor mouse for some reason is only using USB 1.1 when I know for a fact its a USB 2.0 device. It makes no difference what plug I use to plug them in, and I've tried updating drivers, and even reverting to older drivers. I can't figure out whats going on here. The only option I can think of that I havn't tried is going into the bios and making sure the settings for USB are set correctly (though they should be since my ipod seems to use USB 2.0) The problem is, while in the bios all the options are missing or hidden/locked away. All I can do is look at system information, and thats it. I'm on an Asus Z92T laptop. Model: Z92T MB Ver: A6T Model Number: 6AN0AC005477 BIOS: Asus A6T ACPI BIOS Revisions 0601 (08/09/06) Thats about all the information I could find that might be relevent here. I wish I could get this all working properly, had it not been for this software I wouldn't have even noticed that my Razor mouse wasn't using USB 2.0 like it should be, or any of my USB devices for that matter. |

Really silly question but have you got the usb config right in the bios?

Newo,
I had the same problem with my vx 1000. I updated the drivers and managed to fix it. |

I'm still watching this topic guys and I'm still looking for support.
At the moment I'm more interested in people who currently use a vx-1000 and what drivers they use. It would seem that once people get their stuff working they don't bother to ever visit this site again except for checking updates or something because surely there are plenty of people out there with the vx-1000 by now who could provide me with the answer I require. I've gone from through a few stages here so let me explain where I'm at right now. * First descovery of this website and software, really excited and started planning right away. *purchased all the required items and started building *encountered a few problems, no worries I'm sure I'll get them fixed asap *still waiting for support, thats ok I'm sure people are just busy and I'll get some help soon. *Still waiting for support, it seems like I'm the only one looking into these problems. *still waiting for support, I've given up trying to find answers myself now because I've exsausted all resources. Still waiting for support... getting tired of this, focusing on other games and projects now... still checking back though. *and here I am now, still looking for support, focusing on other things and soon to forget about this project and shelve it. Come on guys, I'm not the only one with this issue and I'm not the only one who has the same setup which works fine. |

People normally only visit this type of forum when they have problems. Your problem seems to be specific to your hardware, making it difficult for others to assist. VX-1000s not only have different PIDs (Product IDs) but also VIDS (Vendor IDs) which is very strange, you would expect the VID to be the same for all Microsoft webcams. What this means is that there are numerous vx-1000 versions which each have their own idiosyncrocies, unfortunately.
There's only one source for the latest Microsoft drivers. http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/digitalcommunication/downloads/default.mspx The journey is the destination. |

Hi newo ! Recently I received PM from Ceud . He got same PID/VID as you have Driver version 1.4 I dont have driver version , I hope he will answer me. But I found 5.xx.xx.49 in that bundle and that one you have |

I'm also using a VX-1000, same PID and driver version as yours.
I installed LifeCam 1.4 software before connecting the webcam. When I ran EnableButton and disabled AE, the "Exposure" value in "Camera properties" also got the value 24. I don't think that is a problem since I'm getting 30 FPS anyway (which I didn't before disabling AE). Have you tried another USB-port? Have you tried lowering the resolution in the capture properties? |

I have tried all USB ports and all resolutions available.
I can get about 20 FPS. I'm reasonably sure that the AE fix is working but not 100% sure. |

And you've tried shining a light on the camera (so that the AE gives 30fps) while disabling auto-exposure (as per the FAQ)?
