Hi all, I thought I could take apart a remote control to use the LED inside to create a 1-point track. I asked my Dad to help me, but, being young, I had no idea what I'm doing (I'm 17) and just leapt into it.

I realized once I took it apart, I have no idea what to do. What voltage and current should I be using for a typical remote control LED and can I even use a remote control's LED?

I tested FreeTrack and I have a regular webcam with a filter on top and it works fine with a regular remote control, I just wanted to take it apart, attach it to my headset with a battery pack or something etc.

You don't want to have zoom?Therefor you need 3 leds.
Batteries?Rechargeable or normal.The difference is 1,2v or 1,5v.
It al seems to be a lot of hocus pocus but just take some time and read some more on this forum.Then you can get a good idea of how to make it.

If you want to stick with that one led, you need a resistor.What value it must have depends on the powersupply you want to use.

I'll use a rechargeable battery, AA or AAA I've got access to both, and yeah I'm happy with just a single point for now.

If I did go with a 3 point set-up, would I need a resistor or just 3 LEDs in a series circuit?

the resistor is something you need to limit the current going through the led.The forward voltage is voltage over the led.I shall give you an example.

My powersource gives me 5Volt
I have three ir-leds with a forwarding voltage of 1,5V
The maximum current is 100mA
(5-3x1,5)/ 0,1mA=5 ohm
So if I want to use those leds on the maximum current I need a resistor of
5 ohm.
Driven those leds on the max is not adviseable.It will shorten there life and will shorten the lifetime of your batteries.
I have 3 SFH 485 P leds in serie, if I should use a 4,5V powersupply I theoraticly don't need a resistor.

That led of your remote,if you connect it to 1 rechargeable batterie of 1,2V you also probably don't need a resistor if it has forwarding voltage of at least 1,2 Volt.

In my setup I use 3 SFH 485 P, 1 resistor of 10 ohm and an usb backup battery of 5V.
The things I know about ir-leds is what I learned on this forum. :D
