Bought a Logitech E1000, removed the IR filter no problems.

In the 3D set up page I can get the software to see the 3 LED clip, but it seems to be VERY sensitive to distance. If I hold the clip around 200-300mm from the camera I get three greens, but if I have the cam atop the monitor where I need it to be, (around 500-600mm distance), then it all gets a little hit and miss.

It may not help that I have a window behind me, ie the cam is pointing at a light source, but even when its dark the problem dosent get any better, (or in fact any worse!).

So what should I be looking at to try and reslove the issues? Or is the cam the issue?

Thanks!

I Mouldy,
what kind of lightblocking filter do you use?
And give me some more info about your model you use(leds, resistor and powersource)
It looks like your leds are not bright enough, maybe your resistor has a to high value.

For light blocking Ive used a bit of an old floppy disk. I couldnt tell you much about the 3 LED clip except its this one:-

Reckon the floppy filter is to blame?

Hi mouldy,
your model should be good.I also use a floppydisc as a filter so that should  work also.So we must take a look at your webcam settings.
I have a different webcam but you must check or do the following steps

1)turn off auto-exposure
2)enable outdoor mode
We just need to let the webcam think that you are in a extreme light environment.

3)go to the cam tab in freetrack and select "stream"
4) select 640x480 as resolution
5) choose I420 instead of RGB 24

If you get problems with a low framerate, you have to shine with a brite light in you webcam(without floppy filter).Your framerate will go up and then turn of auto-exposure.

OK, auto exposure. I only have auto gain, is that the same thing? I have disabled auto.

Brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, whitebalance and backlight compensation. I guess these are now irrelevant and can be zeroed?

I switched from RGB to I420 and the cam will not work? Swtch it back to RGB 24 and it will.

Also switched from 320 X 240, (default), to 640 X 480, and at the moment that doesent seem to make much difference except increase the video window.

hi Mouldy,
gain is not the same as exposure. So maybe you don't have auto-exposure.
Brigthness ect I don't have it zeroed for my ms vx3000 webcam

Do you get a BSOD?Or you just don't see any difference or do you see you webcam turn it self off?
I think you leds should be clearly visible regardless if you use rgb or I420.

Try to put the settings of your webcam in his own software to default settings,
Close that software, start freetrack and try it with al zeroed except contrast.
Which operating system do you use?

There is a small green LED on the cam. If I switch to I420 the light goes out, I assume therefore the cam is off. Switching back to RGB24 the light comes back on and I can get a connection, ie the cam see's the three LED clip. However distance is no more than 300mm, and this is hit and miss.

BSOD?

Set up is WIN XP Pro SP2 AMD 64 X 2 Dual core 3800+ and 3GB of RAM NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT

Hi Mouldy,
BSOD =Blue screen Of Death. If you have a conflict with hardware and drivers you a blue screen with an errorcode. Most ofv the times your pc reboots or you have to turn it of manuel. But you don't have this problem :D  :D

Did you install the latest drivers from the logitech website?

If you can only use rgb with your cam, maybe you can try another type of filter to block the normal light and let the IR-light go through.

Ahha! No I dont get BSOD! :) The only difference is that the green LED light on the cam only lights with RGB24 and the cam only operates in the preview window with RGB. Switch it and I get nothing at all.

What if I try a less dense filter such as a bit of 35mm negative? Might give that a go later.

The drivers that are installed seem to be up to date.

Hi Mouldy,
What if you compare a remote controller with your model, is there any difference in brightness of the leds?Do you use a usb-port of you pc or something else?
What is the most confusing for me is, that both, your webcam an your model should work with freetrack, but why can't you get three clear and bright dots of your leds?
Did you try once these settings?
Gain: 75%
Exposure: 75%
Red/Green/Blue: 40%
To avoid problem with settings in Freetrack you can also try  the visibilty of you model in the software of your webcam. If you get it working in you webcam software in a normal way then we can try it in Freetrack. This is how it looks with my webcam software with floppy filter

Hiya,
Well I pushed gain and exposure to 75% after disabling auto gain.

I dont have RGB adjustment available to me, ie it is not greyed out or anything, it just isnt an option to adjust.

By doing this I now have contact, ie three dots showing on the display.

However, the dots are not bright white like you show above, they are three red dots that occasionally have a white cross hair within them.

I tried, as you have suggested, shining two different makes of remote at the cam. Again all I get is red dots, not white.

I changed the floppy filter for a piece of film negative, but there is no change.

The three LED's are plugged into a USB port.

You will get "red dots" in RGB mode.
The "white dots" are in I420 mode.

Thanks, I wasnt aware of that. I don't appear to be able to get the cam to work in I420 but would this be better if I could?

By playing around with the settings I now get three red dots when sat a a normal distance, (about 1m). However the tracking bar at best only shows five red circles, so its running but not tracking.

Hi mouldy,
you use a tree point clip so you must see only three red dots, not five.Did you also select three-point clip at the model tab?
If you see five dots at the tracking bar it sees two more light sources.

Could you move the thrashold slider in freetrack a bit more to the right without loosing your three dots?If you loose your dots move it back a bit to the left., You can also discriminate wrong light sources by changing the size of the dots at the cam tab. You can select there point size and change the minimum and maximum size of the dots.
If everything is good, you wil see three dots with crosshair and three green dots out of five in the tracking bar( right corner)

I don't appear to be able to get the cam to work in I420 but would this be better if I could?

In my case it doesn't seems to matters, but I read the following in the handbook on the home page:

Cameras can see infrared LEDs better than normal ones, they can be better isolated from visible light using filters and they are discrete, emitting no visible light that could otherwise be distracting.
