I'm having a lot of trouble with jitter (i.e. the cursor moving around eratically when I'm keeping my head still) in various programs I've been testing with (haven't built a FT cap/clip yet).

I've noticed the picture from my PS3 Eye seems to be have a lot of noise/pulsing and was wondering if someone could take a look at the picture below and tell me whether it appears to be faulty.

Taken via CL-eye Test at 640x480@30fps.

Are you using FreeTrack with the reflective technique or single LED for the mouse movement?

The noise you're seeing is because of the "gain" value of the capture driver.

I don't think you're referring to the same kind of jitter everyone does; what's the jitter value of the cam in the critical moments (next to FPS)?

Furthermore, what are your system specifications and what programs are you using with FreeTrack?

In any case 30 FPS are few, use 75 FPS at that resolution.

Neither at the moment. I've ordered the LEDs but have been using Camera Mouse, eviacam and FaceTrackNoIR to test in the meantime. What I meant by jitter is that the mouse (in FTNoIR with the Mouse Look profile) is moving around when I'm keeping my head still, as well as drifting (i.e. continuing to move after I stop moving my head).

I've found if I set the FPS in CL-Eye test to 60 that gets rid of the pulsing, which makes sense as that matches my monitor's refresh rate. I had the gain on Auto (as well as the other settings). If I untick that and set it about half-way the noise still looks pretty bad. It might be easier to see in a video, so I've uploaded a 2 sec clip (at 60FPS) to http://youtu.be/3O92WNeqmNo

That's not jitter. Jitter is the variation of a certain value which should be constant during time (as latency or framerate).

If you find problems with those programs, ask for help in the relative forums.

Moreover, it's not a matter of monitor refresh rate matching; it's rather the amount of FPS: the more they are, the better (stuttering or other artifacts decrease and motion becomes smoother).

Try setting the "gain" value to 0 in a  bright environment.

Anyway, FreeTrackwise, wait for the LEDs and filter application to decide whether or not your cam is suitable.

PS The behaviour of your cam is perfectly normal.

I only asked here as I know quite a few people use the PS3 Eye, so thought it would be a good place to check whether my picture was noisier than it should be and if the cam was faulty. Thanks for confirming it's not as I got it for about a third of the price it sells for in the shops and so I'm glad I don't have to return it :)
