Hey guys.

I'm building a homemade racing sim (First for rFactor, then i'll adapt for other games).

Logitech G27, BMW handbrake, hand made Microcontroller powered displays, shift light, and head tracking.

Here's the plan so far:
12x3 digit, seven segment display to the RH side of wheel. Used for laptimes or whatever other info needed.

Will be prototyped on breadboards as pictured and then moved to perfboard, to get the rows closer together vertically.

On top of wheel. Similar to this with rev counter, speed and gear. White shift light.

On LH side of wheel, two or three of these modules to provide other car info. (Temps, fuel, tire wear etc, selectable through onboard buttons)

Monitor is smallish and cheap but will be mounted on a multiple swivel arm so I can get it close to me.

Eventually i'll also have a vibration motor at the brake pedal, to give feedback of wheel lockup.

So this brings me to the head tracking part.
Plan is to have the monitor mounted very close to the wheel, maybe on top of the motor housing.

What should I be looking at tracking wise when my head is an arm's length (or less) away from the screen?

I was thinking PS3 Eye and 3 IR leds.

Will these work properly with head distance so close to the screen?

Thanks for the read, hope you can help me out!

Short answer: Yes no problem. A 3-point cup will be enough.

Almost any camera has enough angle of view so there is no problem with Freetrack to get work tracking in this situation.
