I am trying to make my LED circuit.

I have...

3x http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=getProduct&R=234-0940

Infa Red LED

FWD V = 2
MAX FWD I = 100mA

with a 9V battery

and a 30omh resistor

I am going in series... Battery > Resistor > LED > LED > LED > Battery

I have wired it up and I get nothing, I have the longest leg as the + and the shoter leg as the -

I noticed my resistor got very hot at one point.

I am new to this and completely out of ideas.

Post some pics annotated?

Might help with identifying the problem.

Are all your connections good?

Uff. 9-2-2-2=3V. I=U/R I=3/30=100mA . You shouldn't use maximum ratings for led. Let say 1,5V for ir led and current around 50mA is sufficient. So you need 90 ohm resistor.

Or use LM317 as in this topic:

You can leave out all capacitors.
