Hey, if I turn my head only a small amount, the LEDS are fading away.
I read in the handbook that I have to use IR leds, or : increase the viewing angle by filing the LED lens tips down flat, almost to the metal part and then make the final finish transparent matte (not too shiny, not too rough). but I don't really know what that means. Maybe my LEDS aren't shining enough, but I don't know. Do I maybe have to make a 3 points clip or something? Sorry for my bad English |

What don't you understand? A file is a tool which makes things flat. You need one to make your led flat. Once filed, the led will have wider angle, and it will prevent the led from fading when you turn your head.
The other option is to buy wide angles led, whoses reference is given in the documentation. |

But what do you mean with making the LEDS flat? Do I have to use the file to make the end of the LED flat?

Hi fspilot221,
Yes you use the file (or sandpaper) to make the tip of the LED flat. Don't worry about being too precise with it, as long as you don't expose the metal filaments. Sandor |

won't the LED face be rather rough after this? Does it affect the reception of the light at all?
I am unable to find good led's locally and am considering building a 3 point cap with low angle led, like 20 degrees... any thoughts on this? Cheers, Sean |

I used the 20 degree ones and small file. Haven't tried in freetrack yet because problems with cam (new on way), but tried with mobile (digital photo) and the angle seems to be roughly 120 degrees (60 from center to each side).
The flat part is in fact quite smooth with fine semi-transparent texture, perhaps it depends on roughness of file. Unless it makes it opaque, the roughness should not be problem. It just means that more fraction of light will be scattered around to wide angle. |

Sounds great - i am going to give this a try tonight - hopefully my logitech pro 9000 cam will do the trick also.
The only ones i can find locally require 12 volts... what a pain! Wish me luck |
