Hi folks

I'm busy with my first FreeTrack project.

I have my IR LEDs working correctly, but I've noticed that the beam angle is rather focused. After reading up, it would seem it's a common issue.

The recommended fix is to file down the lens of the LED.

I can't seem to find any tutorial on how to do this... does one use a nail file, sandpaper etc? How deep should one file? Wont the lens become distorted? etc

Any help would be much appreciated.

I would use a nail file first, then the sandpaper it get the scratches out.  File it until it's flat across the top.

I just filed my IR leds this morning for larger beam angle. I used a "medium rough" metal file and no sand paper. I had a problem with too bright leds so I didn't do the sand paper grinding. Now the leds have a nice wide angle and they are not too bright anymore :P

Here is a image of a filed down led (not taken by me, found it from another tread here...) which should give you some idea how much to file away...

Thanks for the advice guys.

I also have a problem with very bright LEDs.. was thinking of adding multiple layers of negative/disk platters, but hopefully the filing will do the trick.

I'll get back to you when I've done it :)

Just to get back to everyone.

I purchase a metal file (Waldo: Flat Bastard File 200mm) for filing.

Lay the file down and pinched the LED with my fingers while running it over the file surface with moderate force. I did this for about 15seconds, filing off about a 1/4 of the lens.

LEDs are now giving a huge view angle and not flaring out.

Tx for all the help :)
