Greetings,

I kept hearing about how good the PS3Eye is 640x480=60 and 320x480=120fps

so went and got the latest drivers to work on windows xp and got it to show up on freetrack.

fooling around with the settings I still was not able to make it work!, I used a floppy film to cover the lens also and it still did not work.

I did notice that it only picks up IR light source 3/4 down the screen via those little tracking cross hairs but the rest it only shows up as light source without any tracking... what gives.

anyone got this to work?, if so got any advice, do I need to remove the IR filter within the camera?

anything would help

Yes that is correct I am using PS3EyeSetup.2.0b81111 drivers, FreeTrack picks it up too, just can't get it to show up correctly.

I have a PS3 eyetoy and once I removed the IR filter (find link on AlexP's site) and added a floppy disk filter, the picture is EXCELLENT.  However, with the latest (2.2.?.279), FreeTrack show the picture, but doesn't track it properly.  With the older version of FreeTrack (1.2) the tracking works great, but the other bugs/crashes in the old version prevent it from really working.
Let me know if you have any luck.  Keep bugging developers for restoring PS3 support!

I have the same problem with the eye- it seems to be 'processing' just the lower quarter of the image and showing live video for the rest of the frame.

I am Using PS3EyeSetup.2.0b81111 and FT 2.2.0.279.
The 'Stream' settings does not show all the resolutions available from the PS3 test ap- it only shows 320x240 and 640x480 at 15fps and 30fps.

Is there an .ini file that I can update as it seems to be some sort of data/resolution mismatch.  Has anyone got this to work?

Use 320x240 resolution for FreeTrack uses. Also try to change stream setting (i420, RGB20, ...).

actually I did not know this thread was still active, I started using these drivers
http://nuigroup.com/?ACT=28&fid=34&aid=1771_5IjCIFklpxMn6N7CMizo

they are the one that sony used to test PS3eye in the production facilities.

it works great

OK, so how is this working out performance wise?  Frames per second, jitter and CPU load?

Thanks!

I'm also interested in the playstation eye's preformance, can't make a decision between the wiimote or ps eye.

(I've bolded the important bits to save you from my wall of text)

Hi! New to the forum (first post)- I felt compelled to answer this question.

I just bought a Playstation (3) Eye specifically for use with FreeTrack. I'm overall positive about its performance: Free Track clocks it between 28-30 FPS with an occasional jitter of up to 3JPS, though you might want to bear in mind that I'm using the drivers sixooo posted above. I should also mention that FreeTrack clocked my Logitech Quickcam Messenger at the same numbers, and that the PS3 Eye is much more responsive.

If you decide to use the PS3 eye, I cannot recommend sixooo's drivers enough (especially because they're the only ones I can find that work). I installed them before I opened my camera to modify it, and from the looks of it, I don't need to remove its IR filter at all.

I tested the camera with Alex Popovich's drivers and found that they picked up the light from my 3-point cap very well. You should note that these drivers are NOT compatible with FreeTrack: for some reason, FreeTrack will only process the bottom 1/4 of the screen with them. Use the drivers posted here.

The fact that the camera seems to be sensitive to IR light already (which makes sense- I believe that Eye of Judgement recognizes cards by IR markers) is awesome, but sixooo's drivers are either monochrome or focus on IR light. FreeTrack works immaculately with these drivers and my headset (3LEDs at 100ma). This has left me with the decision to not modify my camera at all: the drivers combined with the camera's sensitivity seems to be as responsive as the technology can get.

In terms of the camera's performance in FreeTrack, the only comparison I can make is to the Logitech QuickCam Messenger (priced CDN$8-10 lower than the PS3 Eye). The PS3 Eye performs much smoother than the Logitech camera does, and it also seems to have a wider angle lens for a better field of view. I've found that it has made FreeTrack a much better mouse replacement than with the Logitech camera- specifically in how it has stopped random movements from affecting the cursor. I haven't tried it yet, but I assume that the smoothness will translate into Insurgency as well.

I'm not certain how to measure the difference in CPU usage, but I opened Task Manager and checked the memory that FreeTrack.exe was drawing. With the Logitech QuickCam, it came out to 31,xxx k. With the PS3 Eye, it came to 27,xxx k. Again, I can't compare this to other cameras, but the PS3 Eye's CPU draw seems to be low enough that it isn't an issue for me (note: I have a dual-core processor)

One final note: when you use the drivers that sixooo's posted, you will NOT be able to use the Playstation Eye's microphone. Sadly, the drivers do not seem to be compatible with any audio driver I can find (I've tried to force install different drivers for the mic but to no avail). If your expectation of this product's use with FreeTrack includes being able to use the microphone, you will be disappointed. Fortunately, I bought this because it's a smooth running camera.

EDIT: The PS3 Eye's auto-focus is a nice feature too, though I've heard that FreeTrack performs better with the LED points slightly out of focus. I cannot verify this.

Thanks for the you're reply  :D

Just yesterday i found this movie demonstrating a PS3 developer doing sort of the same thing freetrack does with the PlayStation EYE.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/169289.html

He only used a homemade IR filter, and it looks like the LEDs are clearly visible in the video's so the camera is probably already very well suited for freetrack without removing the IR filter (like you said).

Im only interested in the PS EYE because i also have a Playstation 3, so that it would be nice if i also could use in some games.

To bad about the driver support not working out like it should, but so long it works with freetrack it's not really a problem for me.

I think i'm gonna order the TrackClip PRO first and test it out with my current USB cam (Dynalink VIDEOPRO USB) and my standard video cam (JVC EVERIO MG-330).

Did some tests this morning and with a IR filter (floppy disk) the Everio picked up my TV remote IR without a problem... only thing is is runs at 25fps max. due to the PAL standard... well lets hope that's not gonna be a problem.

It worked on vista 32-bit but I can't get it to work with Windows 7 64-bit. HELP!

EDIT:
It turns out that the latest drivers work when you set the resolution to 320x240! Works at any frames per second on there!
