Hi all,

I am  just starting to bulid my first 3 point cap model, and most likely camera type will be MS VX1000, Ir filter removed.

Cap will be (hopefully) made so that leds are changeable without soldering. and plan is to use the with current of 75 mA but came up with a thought is this enough for VX1000? any info and real life experiences with this combination would be helpful. Led type is Osram SHF485P.

Hello Drsnow

If your IR filter is removed on your webcam , even low currents are more than enough to acheive good tracking in all ligthing conditions.

Setups already created :

SFH485P 20 - 25 mA + IR modded VX1000 : works great
SFH485P 20 - 25 mA + IR modded Logitech quickcam messenger : works great too
On each setup : 1 layer of radiographic sheet as VL filter.


Based on my experience, if using an IR modded webcam, 75mA is not only enough , but far too much.

I suggest you stick to 50mA max... Thats more than enough, and you'll need less current (greater lifespan if powered by batteries).

................now just waiting for those damn leds to arrive....... :pinch:

I've finished my system yesterday, also bought 485p and the VX-1000 cam.

Luckily i purchased 4 * 60 ohm, because after reading this thread, I used 3 * 60 ohm instead of one 60 ohm resistor. So my LEDs are running on about 25mA atm.

Working great with modded cam.

Today, i had my first cap finished and after few ours of learning and modifying i was able to get the first blood out of ArmA. ...Experience was almost unbeliavable  :love: especially flying a helicopter got a whole new meaning.

So here's a roaring  HOOAH!  :D  for all developers who have made this awesome job. Keep it going dudes!

Also, where did you get your osrams, and for how much each?

I need to find some leds that costs less than 20 cents each. And I'd love to use 485p's, but I only find them for 54 cents or more. I ran my supplier completely out of leds and I have to sand them down by hand. I'm getting tired of sanding, so these would be perfect.

Well, i can say that i have been in military service, but not in US or Canada. ;)

In reserve these days......


I bought the leds from Farnell through my workplace. (electric industry)
price was around 0.35 eur / piece. (0% tax) + shipping, so it's not cheap even for industrial use. Of course if i had bought a 10 000 leds instead of 10, the price would have been different. .....So sanding down is still a good option, i'm just too lazy.

For being curious, i tried to sand down a red led with emery* (don't know if thats the correct word) at my workplace, which showed up to be very effective for that purpose.

*a bench machine for sharpening and polishing blades and other metal parts.

I use a belt sander, then a finger nail buffer. It has excellent results, but I hate having to do it, and I have done this literally over a thousand times.

yeah, 0.35 euro is too much. There is a company in taiwan I'm talking to that makes some flat head led's. I'm waiting on comfimation of cost per unit, and minimum order quantity. Maybe the'll work out. I don't know.
