I'm looking for some basic, step by step instructions of how to make the physical tracking system.  I've read the documents on the front page, they go into a lot of detail about how to configure the software but they don't appear to explain the construction process.

Does anyone have a basic guide about what to buy and how to build it?

Jools,

I 've read in your previous post why you will make an IR-cap / pen
http://forum.free-track.net/index.php?showtopic=1425
You will use it as a mouse replacement, so you only need 1-ir-led setup

see this link for tutorial of making a remote pen: http://www.labcoding.com/generic/multi-touchscreen-using-the-wiimote/

In Freetrack use "1-single point model" and  in output select mouse.
Use your remote control (from TV) and hold down a botton to test this, it will work.

If you wan't more control (like scrolling) you have to build a 3 point model
See my build: http://forum.free-track.net/index.php?showtopic=466&page=4#8487

see also this site (not using freetrack software)

Thanks very much!  Between those links and a Skype conversation with a friend, I think I've pretty much got it. I think I need the following:

heat shrink
IR 5mm leds
resistors
bike light
some rigid wire

The only thing I'm not too sure about now is setting up the wii remote. Anyone got any links explaining how to set up the bluetooth?

I'm quite excited by the prospect of all this!  I'm gonna head out on Friday to Den Den town to pick up the parts.  And thanks very much for the head mouse link.  If it all goes wrong, that'll be my plan B!

If you buy your parts be sure to order some extra leds/resistors.
