Hello Digger

Wavelength OK. Since they're 850nm, you should see a faint red glow when the led is operating.

View angle too narrow , you'll probably have to file them flat using sandpaper.

Power ok , don't drive them with more than 60mA, since it's the max continuous admissible current.

And what do you think of Osram SFH 487 P.

It has much wider angle than recommended 485 P and other specs are same. Maybe it is even better for free track than 485.

Anyway, I ordered few of these and I will let you know.

Hello Soko

the SFH487P has a 3mm case

Freetrack works better with 5mm leds, so you should better stay with SFH485P, or another 5mm IR led.

ok, I recieved the IR LEDs i bought on Ebay, and with Powering them with the above Specs that they came with, I get nothing, no glow, or no IR light the the freetrack picks up. I've made several head trackings units so far and never had a problem until now, I've even tried just to light one and still no good, I was wandering if i should try more or less voltage or mA to get them to light up. Please Help! :(

Did you try reversing the polarity?  I know, but sometimes, a manufacture doesn't follow the absolute standard.

Edit:  I see you got it figured out.  Good Job!
