Hey guys,

I've been a way for a while !! I didn't even knew that FT was open source again !!! oO
and I completely forgot to check out the faceapi lately, so it's seems like I lived underground for a while.

so anyone is making a shot ?
I did a prototype @work with another techno than faceapi, actually an internal one. anyway, plug it to FSX. and it's working just fine !!
When I the tracking is loosing me, I just reset the view, the POV button of my joystick gets activate if it's still lost.
Since the techno I used @my job won't be released to public. I think faceapi is your only way to get this kind of feature and for FREE

good luck ;)

I was thinking of doing this myself until I tried the FaceAPI demo. It's a resource hog and rotation measurements are very poor, with bad face acquisition and low resolution.  Special lighting conditions and backdrop are still needed.  The only advantage, not needing head mounted hardware, is simply not worth the sacrifice in quality and reliability. Waste of time in my opinion.

I did it today for the one that are interesting !

I didn't do it the really good way, since I took the example of their Console Mode Source code and add to it the CockpitCamera.cpp example which stand in the FSX sdk. A friend of mine help me a little bit, but he didn't have much time to do it for me. And since I'm just a CG Artist ... well that's really crappy :) .. but it's working, in a rough way :)

Anyway I'll clean it a bit in the week end and share the source with you then. So you'll be able to do whatever you want with it.

At this point, I had rotation and translation factors, and a smooth solution (that doesn't work :p, I suck in math ^^). It's a command application. and the connection with simconnect are done at launch no way to turn it off or back on whenever you want

voilà :)

I'm going to take a look at both the FaceAPI and the FSX Api set later today when I get home.

I'm curious, though, in the interest of progress, would you want to release what work you have completed so far?  The source code I mean.  Technically, you are bound to by the Licensing agreement for the FaceAPI, but I don't want to be a dick, so I just was curious if you'd share.

That way, I won't have to work through the initial setup stuff before getting into the meat of tweaking the software.

I could try to make a better smooth function so that it doesn't snap like crazy.

Poking around a bit at your source (I found the link on the Vimeo!)

I was able to dampen the effect of the jittering by placing limits on the minimum movement...  For instance, if the absolute value of the Rotation around the Y axis is less than 1 (relative to the last frame), then I simply didn't move.

There is still, however, some REALLY messed up problem in the code that I just must be simply missing.  It seems to have a SEVERE problem with the Z axis of the head position... that's where it seems to be jumping around at, and you can't move about the Z axis the same way you can the other two (in game).

I'm going to keep tinkering it, but for now, if you wanted to smooth it out a touch more than you already have it, just make minimum movement threshold.

Yeah, if Free-Track worked with FaceAPI that would be amazing. Any programmers made any progress?

Has anyone made any progress with the FaceAPI software(or any other), it seems to be the future of things but no company see's it(esp Natural Point).  Perhaps we'll be able to use something like Microsoft's Kinect in our simulators someday.

I for one would like to get rid of the restrictive headgear and stop looking funny in front of the family.

I am not sure if you have seen this:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/facetracknoir/
It uses FaceAPI and outputs to TrackIR, Freetrack, PPjoy and others

Thanks Neel,

Woot!

I spent the whole morning configuring it to work, it plays ok with DCS: A-10 but its a little sluggish but still working on it.  Anyone know how to get network function to work? it seems to built right in but I can't make heads or tails of it.

thanks again.

It's just been updated (Update4_20101103)!!  Now it has curves and support for FS2002/FS2004/FSX and other modifications as well it says.
