Hello. I just registered to this forum. I am italian. I was interested in playing games with helmet visual, such as DIRT, GTR2 and GRID.
I saw the Track IR, which costs too much for me (140 euros). I wanted to play GRID with track IR, so I decided to build a freetrack cap. Questions: 1 - why the 4 LED is obsolete? Is it better 3 LED, 1 LED or 4 LED? I thought 4 led was the best because the more points the webcam can recognize, the bettere the movement would be represented. 2 - I'm going to buy red LEDS, and as energy I would use two AA batteries. Do you think I should use some resistance? Two AA batteries could give ~3V, do you think is it too much for a 2,1V led? 3 - Is the performance of FREEtrack as good as the performance you have with original Track IR? 4 - will I be able to play GRID with my system, or should I wait for some update of the software? Here's a couple answers. 1. The 4 LEd's obsolete because the 3 LED manages the same accuracy with less power consumption and a euro saved on the extra LED. 2. You always need to use resistance with LED's http://www.free-track.net/english/hardware/calcled/ Use that calculator to calculate how many of which one you need If you want, I could do it for you, but I'm going to need a) your battery voltage b)your LED Voltage and c) Your LED Forward Current 3. If Configured properly with good solid hardware(good, Wide angle LED's, a good webcam that can achieve 30 FPS without using up your processor too much http://www.free-track.net/english/hardware/webcam.php) the Yes, it could very much achieve the same tracking quality. The biggest problem you'll probably see is your processor being used a little more to handle the camera, TrackIR gets it done within the cam. But if your computer's fast enough, you're god to go. 4. Sorry, I have no experience with the game so can't tell you that one. |

2 - I am boing to buy this leds (3 leds) in my town: http://shop.griederbauteile.ch/product_info.php?products_id=4615 with a schalter http://shop.griederbauteile.ch/product_info.php?products_id=14383 I thought I could use two AA batteries (~3V), but now I think it is too much and LEDS could burn, is it right? So I have to put a resistance. So maybe it could be good to have a 9V batterie for all 3 leds (2.1 x 3 = ~6V) with a resistance, am I right? I not very expert in electronics components. 3 - i have a Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX with an X2 6000+ CPU, i hope it will be ok with GRID and DIRT. 4 - no problem ^_^ i just want to build my cap, first |

sorry it was not a correct led (it was blink)

If I am reading the specs correctly from your link, the Volts is 2V and the max current is 20mA. I don't read speak or listen in Italian so correct me if I am wrong. The calculator as linked in the above post recommends a 150ohm resistor if you are going to use the 9V battery. My 9V battery setup is working great. Oh instead of buying a resistor, I bought a variable resistor so I could tweak the resistance value as needed. Its a pain to set as you have to hold the leads of your voltmeter and adjust at the same time, but once its set, it should increase the life of my LED's. i'm not expert in electronics, however i already built my cap (before reading your post, sorry but thanks )
I used 3 resistor of 200ohm, with 3 LEDS (3 V / 30 mA), and a 9 volt battery. This is result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiY6Q7azLOM I am very satisfied! I have to practise with configuration, but it's ok till now! |
