Do we have to use a key command, or can the joystick be
setup to send a command to FreeTrack to center the view or
enable FreeTrack?

if your stick comes with some kind of "profile software" you can use that to map some buttons to unused keys for freetrack use. if your stick does not have that kind of software you can use glovepie for doing the mapping.
