I'm very new to electronics, but i wonder if Freetrack is compatible with an external hardware platform(s). I'm thinking about building my own IR receiver/tracker to use with my 3 point clip but my only concern is will freetrack recognize it if i connect it trough USB ?. I'm deff' sure you'll need to implement coding into a chip to make it a HUB just as the gyroscope-head tracker from Arduino.

Anyone else has knowledge/ideas about this ?. It might be interesting to banish webcam's and step up to something better, responsiver, reliable and less resource based.

Hi,
I've tried out this one,

EdTracker

in the DIY protoboard version from Hobby components

DIY EDTracker Bundle

and imho it's the first reliable alternative to getting rid of webcam and head mount.

Difference to Freetrack:

- Just 3-axis tracking instead of 6-DOF
- Output is a virtual 3-axis joystick, so that you do not have exactly the same game compatibility. (Nevertheless you can use it with opentrack to use the Freetrack protocol.)

This certainly will be fine too with DIY virtual reality 3D glasses since you have possible 360° physical movements.

+1
I also use it now instead of ir-tracking.And I must say it is much easier to get it to work then modifying a webcam and building that ir-model.At this moment the devopper of Ed-tracker is trying to get the z-axis functional by using a webcam.

I whas weighting out between that tracker or the IR route. I bought all parts to make a sturdy and realiable 360degree tracking clip but the problem is i don't know if i can find all the right parts for the ED tracker.

+ to which positionings is the ed tracker limited ?.i know looking up n down and left and right works. How about leaning forward/backward and sideways ?.

you only have 3dof with an ed-tracker but they are working on something with a webcam to get a z-axis for zooming.
Have you also watched the video'on their site?By combining the yaw axis with the x-axis you make a sort of look over your shoulder view.If you combine the pitch with the z-axis you can make it possible to lean a little forward while looking up.This somethinh rather usefull in a flightsim .

I have changed my mind xD...problem is finding these parts. I can't seem to find a store that has all parts in stock and or provide alternative payments then creditcards/paypal. Not realy fond of Virtual transactions so i'm kinda screwed on this again.

Hobbycomponents.com only does creditcard payments, the store tha has the EDTracker bundles for sale
