Hi
I plan to buy a PS3 EyeCamera to use with FT. I play ArmaII but also want to use it to control the mouse pointer in Windows, as I'm getting some pains from using a mouse. I just need to find a good, cheap source for the LEDs. I did want to use an LED source on the TV, with reflectors on a head-mount. I thought perhaps I could buy this and replace the LEDs with IR ones http://www.amazon.co.uk/PPM-Webcam-Built--microphone-lights/dp/B003VYTZHG/ref=sr_1_37?ie=UTF8&qid=1336584423&sr=8-37 but I understand using reflectors doesn't tend to work so well, so I guess I'll go with the head-mounted LEDs. Farnell have got 5mm, 880nm LEDs for 46p each, but they have a minimum order charge of £20 for card orders! http://uk.farnell.com/osram/sfh485p/ir-emitter-5mm-880nm/dp/1212738?Ntt=SFH485P I plan to build two headsets, so I only really need 6 LEDs, but I'm not sure if any of these are better than the others, so perhaps someone could advise which (or something else) would be best for FT? On ebay I can get 100*850nm 5mm LEDs for £4 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100-x-5mm-IR-infrared-LEDs-Lamp-850nm-100-Resistors-/290554033785?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a65eb679 and/or 100*940nm 5mm LEDs for about £4 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100-PCS-940nm-5mm-IR-infrared-LEDs-Lamp-100-Resistors-/300678843076?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4601db0ac4 or 20*940nm 5mm LEDs for £1.70-£2 from the UK http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20-x-5mm-Infrared-LED-940nM-infrared-light-emitter-and-detector-/300612671593?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item45fde95869 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20x-INFRARED-LEDs-5mm-INF-RED-940NM-Clear-Case-Style-/150451668309?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&hash=item23079e4555 or 10*940nm 5mm LEDs (+resistors) for £2.90, but it doesn't specify what resistors they are http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-INFRA-RED-LEDs-940nm-5mm-led-leds-FREE-Rs-/190447354302?pt=UK_ConElec_LightingLEDsStrobes_RL&hash=item2c578c01be and 10*850nm 5mm LEDs (+resistors) for £2.90 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/QTY-10-INFRA-RED-LEDs-850nm-5mm-led-FREE-RESISTORS-YOUR-CHOICE-/190675148045?pt=UK_ConElec_LightingLEDsStrobes_RL&hash=item2c651fdd0d |

Get the OSRAM - SFH485P from Farnell anyway, all the others got lower viewing angle and much lower radiant intensity.
Try Headmouse: http://robotica.udl.cat/ Works without head-mounted LEDs, just face-tracking. And it works quit well. |

OK thanks, if the others are no good there's no point getting them. Unfortunately I don't think there's anything else I need at the moment to get up from £3 (for 6 LEDs) to £20 for Farnell's minimum order, so I'll have to see if I can find the SFH485P somewhere else.
Cool, thanks for the tip, I'd not heard of that. Do you know if it will work with the PS3 EyeCamera, as it's not on the compatible list but they just might not have tested with it? I'm curious now though, if Headmouse can track head movements without any LEDs, shouldn't it be possible to do the same in games to provide two degrees of freedom (2DOF)? |

I don't know for the PS3 Eye, but if you can use it like a normal webcam, I don't see an objection.
Yes you can, I've tried it in IL-2 (shooting with blinking eye ). But you can get only 2DOF and you have to center often, when the mouse cursor runs out of screen. It's not a real alternative to Freetrack for games. But works good in Windows. |

OK, I think it'll be OK as it exceeds the requirements for HeadMouse.
Shooting with blinking eye sounds cool Anyway, it sounds like it will give me something to play around and use to show others how cool the concept is whilst I try and find a reasonably priced source for the SFH485P LEDs. I just found this source which has them for 0.47 € each plus 6.00 € postage, which works out to 10.70 € for 10, which is £8.76. That's not too bad but I'll keep looking to see if I can find a UK supplier with cheaper shipping as it seems silly to pay as much for shipping as for the (small) items themselves. |

Well I got my PS3 Eye today and FreeTrack detects it (after installing CL-Eye-Driver-5.0.1.0218 and Freetrack2.2.0.279CLeyePatch) but Headmouse just says "There are no drivers for this camera/camera not connected"
Other Cam software works fine and I found another program called Camera Mouse which works, although it doesn't seem as good as Headmouse (certainly can't do shooting/clicking with blinking eye but also seems a bit jittery and hard to control, although I may just need to get used to it), so it's shame that doesn't work. |

Hm, so you cannot use PS3 Eye as a normal webcam?
Sorry, I do not know that. Yes there are several Mouse via webcam programs. An other one is eviacam. But Headmouse is better. |

Yeah I can. It's works with various webcam software I downloaded, just not with Headmouse for some reason. I've asked the developers if they could look into it.
I'll look at eviacam thanks. |

Have you installed the CL Eye driver? http://codelaboratories.com/products/eye/driver/
It works as a webcam for me after installing that. |

Eviacam is much less jittery thanks although it doesn't have a disable/enable key (like F9 in Camera Mouse) which makes it tricky to re-centre. I also got my first ever BSOD on this PC whilst running it! Hopefully Headmouse will be made compatible with the PS3 Eye sometime. |

yes I did. The camera works with all other software including skype and free track. I emailed the developers and they told me they are gonna be doing some testing. i find camera mouse unusable. |

I've received a reply from the Headmouse developers now and it's bad news I'm afraid
"We are sorry but the speed and performances of HeadMouse requires a fully compatible webcam with video capabilities (continuous image acquisition) in a resolution of 640x480 pixels and the PS3 eye camera does not follow the webcam standard. We are sorry but the same problem appears in most laptop PC's with integrated webcam. We have included the PS3 eye camera as not compatible in our list in the web." |

Use virtual webcam software and it will work, I recommend Magic Camera as it has full camera control unlike the more popular SplitCam.
