Yesterday I bought a Genius videoCAM NB webcam for use with FreeTrack.
Everything seems fine unless in the driver settings there is a gray box next to auto exposure. The slider beside can be modified but with no response to the screen. (the function works though, If the cam turned to a light source it reduces brightness and set's higher FPS) I tried a Trust WB3100-p webcam too, in it's driver preferences the auto exposure box was the same (uncheckable) but was checked already. I'm confused! Maybe I have problems with drivers, but I do not know any way to install other drivers for the same cam. Is there any way to force a webcam to turn off auto-exposure function? If anybody interested I will post a screenshot from the driver preferences screen but it is not so interesting though. |

Hi,
Wich type of OS you used (windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista ?) Directx 9.0c is up to date ? Have you tried to put a negative filter on your webcam ? what is the result ?

I use Win XP SP2 with latest updates. The DirectX version is 9c. I double checked it. I haven't modified the webcam yet, but I'm sure it is not necessery for the webcam setup. |

Okay, bad news!
I messed up with some device drivers. So I tried to install other similar product drivers after changed the webcam vendor IDs. No success on this. Even the chip manufacturers offical driver didn't work. Then I removed every driver, the webcam had to be installed again after connected. But unfortunately now I have not even the earlier panels in the preferences. Actually theres is only the compression and light source tabs. The color, saturation, exposure, etc. tabs totally disappeared! |

After I reinstalled the driver seems fine. But no auto expossure switch to turn off.
I think they are webcams with simply cheap drivers that can not control this functions. I opened a topic for these I found. This topic can be closed!

Same problem here with a genius videocam messenger. It's seem to be possible to change this setting on ubuntu (linux).
http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1067781#p1067781 Perhaps there is an alternative driver on xp? |

From that I could figure out, all the webcams has the ability to control exposure through it's driver program.
This time the driver and the driver controls need to discuss separately. The driver controls the exposure, so that is a software. The driver control is controlling the driver (a different software). The ability to control the exposure supposed to be in the driver control program (too). If somebody writes it, he/she can implement that function but the drivers we have for the non-suitable cameras don't contains it. I do not know if there would be any alternative driver for webcams. |
