First off thanks to everyone for all the help.
I probably wouldn't of had the motivation to actually get it working.

My question is.   Is it better to have the webcam head height and slightly to the right of the monitor, or is it better to have it dead center but lower than the monitor.   I'm dealing with a distance issue.  The monitor is probably about 3-4 feet away so I'm mounting the cam on a stool with a makeshift stand.

I'd think a webcam with a stand/clip would be the best - works for both CRT and LCD screens. Most webcams come with that type of footstand.

I've tested both a Logitech STX and Microsoft VX3000 ontop of my screens (using their own clip designs) without any problems.
