Hey,

So I think I've got the bad PS3Eye.

Now the question is if I should open it up and remove the IR filter (if possible) or keep it on.

I've got ordinary (unspecified) cupola IR-LEDs running @60mA, and I found out the hard way that it's impossible to keep the IR filter while increasing the spread and adding the IR-pass filter. Light gets too weak at too small a distance. I got better results when I cut the LED (cleaner) but the problem is still there.

Keeping it on would require me to get new IR-LEDs. Some of the following?

The last ones got an impressive spread, but they seem a bit less intense.

I do realize that keeping the IR-filter on perhaps increases the need to recharge the batteries, but in one way the design is attractive as it would work on other PS3Eyes, and that it would be less sensitive to environmental IR.

Using a USB-battery pack would probably be the best option, but it increases costs/weight while bringing little benefit (I can always put in a new batch of recharged AA -batteries).

I know a lot of people use a clip, but what about mounting 2 lateral LEDs at the headphones/ears and one ventral-cranially (perhaps at the tip of a pen/stick originating from the battery unit)?

I ended up with getting

10 SFH 485 P
- 5mm 40deg 100mA (standard IR here)

And just for fun:

4  SFH 487 P
- 3mm 65deg 100mA

4  OIS-150 880-X-TU
- 3mm-ish , 140deg 50mA

They have free UPS shipping at conrad until the 20th of March, which is overkill. But it really made prices reasonable. Otherwise shipping would've cost me more than the components.

Hi,

imho the SFH 485 P are the way to go.

The 487 are Ø3mm and to small for a good result.

What daylight-filter solution did you try?
Sometimes the right filter does the job, as the inbuild IR-filter of the PS3 isn't very strong.

You can try other wavelength too, like the LD 274 with 950nm.

I'll try the 485P as soon as they arrive. I use a floppy as a daylight filter. I tried a rounded IR-filter I found, but it has a slight lens effect which smudges the light (resulting in a non-linear dot-motion).

One or two layers of exposed photographic film seems to be the way to go.

Yes definitely, as you can easily see from this post:
Filter solutions

It shows clearly that floppy disk is actually a real bad daylight filter solution, as it blocks large part of ir-light too.

I got my hands on a SLEH-00448 and opened it. However, the lens was of the "bad" type.

From the front the SLEH-00448 and SLEH-00201 look almost the same. The SLEH-00201 has a second more bluish reflection which only appears in the perifery of the SLEH-00448.

Both have two metallic rings surrounding the lens, the SLEH-00201 has its outer ring surrounded by a black ring, while the SLEH-00448 has a more gray variant.

On the back of the 00201 there's a white text that says playstation eye, and the screw covers are of plastic (hard) while the 00448 has rubber covers.

However, the IR filter of the 00201 seems to be filtering much more than the 00448. I'll try opening the 00201.

Edit: It's harder to open the 00201, but the lens turns out to be bad there too. Electronics look different though.

So I bought my third and last PS3 cam, now with the IR filter pre-removed, from Delan Engineering. It's a SLEH-00201, however, it's very clear from the outside that the lens is rounded. The difference is greater than what you see from the comparison pictures on some sites. Version number seems to be irrelevant for the type of lens you get.

The difference with a removed IR-filter is enormous, but the integrated visible light filter, filters less than my own filter, one more layer of something would probably have been a better option, but it won't likely be a problem in any case. I bought the clip as well (but got no separate filters - which I should have according to the product description), it has a fuse, however I wasn't able to identify any resistor. The diodes are likely SFH485P's. The most impressive thing however, is the metal clip itself, which was the reason for my purchase. (How do you even find companies that are willing to cut metal for you?). The international shipping was more or less instantaneous, one or two days.

Now I'll proceed to make a wireless cap.

Edit: Does the PS cam work in Win 10? I'm thinking about the drivers.

Edit 2: The diodes are a bit too bright in the non-IR filter camera. FreeTrack has a bit of a problem resolving the big blobs as one point (algorithmically I think this could be fixed easily, but I don't know if we have the source code). But I think this is good for constructing my cap, as I can reduce batter drain by using greater resistors.

I also noticed that clips get a bit of a problem with diodes blending into each other, which shouldn't happen as much in a cap.
