Hi,

it's ok, go for this one.
Possibly you have to file them down, if the view angle isn't great enough.
But try it first.
Get one 10 Ohm resistor too in case the LED isn't bright enough.

The first head device I built (3 point clip) I ordered some IR LEDs from DealExtreme.com. I think it was these http://www.dx.com/p/5mm-ir-led-emitters-20-pack-2399. They worked well enough but I had issues with them burning out prematurely.

The second head device I built was a 3 point hat. I definitely recommend a hat instead of the clip. I used plain old red LEDs like these http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10001_10001_333973_-1

The closer you can get to 700nm to 800+nm wavelength the better probably. With the red LEDs, which are around 660nm, I found while you can still see the light coming from them, they worked great and I haven't had to replace one yet. Yes I was running the IR LEDs within spec, they just were not lasting like the red ones. Its easy enough to get my camera to isolate them.

For camera by the way, I am using a Playstation 3 Eye. My first camera was a Microsoft Lifecam. The Lifecam worked well, but there is a marked improvement in tracking speed and smoothness with the PS3 cam. The drivers for the PS3 cam were a bit more complicated to set up but once I got it working it was well worth it. I got mine used at Gamestop for about 10 or 12 dollars. If you do get one I recommend getting the clip mount for it which is about 5 or 6 dollars US.

Like I said, red LEDs work great and I probably won't go back to IR cause there is just no reason to. Hope this helps.
