Damnit, I have the exact same problem.  Did you ever get anywhere solving it?

The software loads fine for me, initially prompting me to run it in administrator mode.  Once I have done that it's all fine until the point you push "Start" it then crashes instantly.

OK... now I've tried various compatibility settings to no avail.  I have these errors in the Event Viewer consistently at time of crash:

Faulting application name: FreeTrack.exe, version: 2.2.0.279, time stamp: 0x2a425e19
Faulting module name: FreeTrackFilterSSE2.ax, version: 1.5.3.0, time stamp: 0x2a425e19
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00063b2e
Faulting process ID: 0x16c8
Faulting application start time: 0x01cdeb58e051843c
Faulting application path: D:\Program Files (x86)\FreeTrack\FreeTrack.exe
Faulting module path: D:\Program Files (x86)\FreeTrack\FreeTrackFilterSSE2.ax
Report ID: 20d1b644-574c-11e2-be85-5404a6698dab
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

Is there any particular reason the source code link on the main page is:

a) Broken
b) Once fixed to browse the repository asks for a username and password?

Seeing as this project appears to be abandoned with no code changes in 4 years perhaps letting the community hit the source code will allow us to patch in Win 8 compatibility?

** Update **

I've also tried DirectX9c from Nov 2008 to no avail, I suspect it was already installed as I play a lot of old games but was worth installing it to check.  I have also tried the older 2.1 version of FreeTrack which unsurprisingly exhibits the same problems.

I have progress.  I read about problems with PS Eye on 64bit systems and hunted around in random boxes till I found a Logitech Webcam 300 (According to win 8, the camera has practically no info on it bar a Logitech logo).

First time around it started fine and did stuff.   The subsequent loads it went a bit crazy giving me completely red or grey screens.  However... no crashes.  So the crashes do seem to be the combination of 64bit windows, the cl drivers for ps eye and freetrack itself.

** A bit of fiddling with the Logitech camera settings dialogue that pops up gave me a black screen with nice bright dots from my breadboarded IR LEDs.  Tomorrow I'll be putting them on a hat with the proper measurements. **

Did you try to install and run it with admin-rights?
Do you use another DIP in Win8 than the default?

I had this same problem with version 2.2 on win 8 but then I installed v 2.1.2 and it stopped and the program works ok. I had to use the old  v3.0.0.0901 drivers for the PS3 Eye because the latest ones 5.3.0.0341 froze freetrack when I cliked on start
