Hello guys, i've been using Freetrack for a long time now and i can say that this software is really amazing. I was thinking of building a new setup with MS VX-1000 webcam as my modded Creative Vista Plus seems to consume too much CPU (45% and no matter what i do it's still the same)  messing up my frame rates in Lock On Flaing Cliffs. So to make it short i ordered SFH 485-2 IR LED's and a  MS VX-1000  webcam.  I was thinking of running the  LED's at 70 mA... My question is: Will MS VX-1000  work WITHOUT having to remove the IR filter?

Hi Trooper ! :)

In the webcam compatibility list, we can read that the IR filter is easy to remove and there is a guide to help your removing it on the website.

But I think it may work without having to remove the IR filter... Maybe if you want to make it sure, you should run the LEDs at 75 mA or something like that ? ^^ I don't know if it'll affect the brightness a lot anyway... ^^

Thanks didja for the quick reply, the reason i ask is because i want to use the webcam for other things not only for Freetrack but yes i think i will have to wait until i get it ( its on its way along with the LED's) to see how it goes and then post the results. Meanwhile whoever runs MS VX-1000  Without removing IR filter is welcome to give their feedback please :)

How do you think you'll power your LED ?

If you are experiencing some problems and they're going to be powered with a power supply, maybe you could use something closer to 100mA than 70 (since you don't care how quick your batteries are going to be drained ^^ )?

You'll try anyway, if something goes wrong, there's got to be something we can do to make it working ;) !

But as you said, if there is someone who experienced it with this webcam... Feel free to post your feedback ;) !

I got a Vx-3000 and I can tell you that there was no tracking function with IR-Filter. So you need to remove the IR Filter.

That is 3 LEDs !  :) And it's okay to power them ;) .

About the VX3000, I wouldn't be that sure, it could work since they aren't exactly the same... and sometimes, it is enough to make them really different ! ^^ But thanks for your feedback WilderPiz ! You might be right...

Confirm guys... Vx-1000 will NOT work wothout having to remove IR filter first. It consumes 10% max of CPU whereas Creative vista plus would use 35-40%.
A huge improvement eh?

Well i got my first test with the vx-1000 cam, without the filter removed, and works like a charm. (in IL-2) didnt have time to try fsx yet and it is a crude test, only taped the thing together, lol and out of alignment too. Its made from things i had at home lying around. Will refine it this week. I am using 3 white leds from a bicycle lamp - yeah i know that red and green recommended   :gene: -  with 2 AA batteries, and even at daylight can follow my head movements in the game. Of course my aim is the IR led model so will get back if i get it working. Cheers

Edit: Made my model more sturdy, it is real good in IL2 (2DOF) although have some problems with FSX with the zooming function. I think some refining with the Freetrack program will make it right.
