Hi,  just got this all wired up with the switch, but it doesnt appear to be getting power..??  I use these batteries for R/C model flying as an Rx battery...it tested ok.....
I got the IR LED's from the local Jaycar store along with the resistor....

IR LED    http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=ZD1945

Resistor http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=RR0533&keywords=rr0533&form=KEYWORD   click on the enlarge image and its the blue one 2nd up from the bottom...

The battery is what I use for flying RC electrics models...Rx battery...NIMH 350MAH 4.8v

Using the resistor wizard called for a 24 ohms 5% one on 50mA dissipated power 0.06 watts...(this one is a 0.5 watt... I have assumed these dont have a direction

I can do small soldering etc but am not familiar with putting an electric system together...

Any help much appreciated!!!....

Laurie

I have also found in the Jaycar catalogue (page 193) that the resistor I bought is a "0.5W 1% metal film mini size" resistor which has the range of Ohms required...the 0.25W ones only go up to 10 Ohms...they say to use the ones I got for higher resistance values....Laurie

Hi Laurie,

resistor is ok.
The LEDs are well wired? Verify sense +/- like here:

Don't forget, you can't see IR-light. It will be visible in Freetrack Cam-window when tracking started. You can check webcam IR visibility with any IR remote control (TV etc.).

Here is a source for the SH485P for better results:

Verify to this diagram:

Hi Steph/Dewy,

Thanks!!...checked and I had the top LED wired back to front to the middle on...now rewired ok and Freetrack can see it ok (the TV remote worked well too btw)...

However it is having trouble keeping the LED's "locked" as per the indicators at the bottom right....I suspect this means I need to remove the IR filter of the camera   MS VX800....the "skull" is hardly moving...stop/start..stop... etc..

I sanded the top/bottom LEDs and it shows them as + while the center on (unsanded) is a large dot...

I will open the camera and see if I can remove the filter

Settings changed to get camera working...set exposure to -10 from auto at -4
Turned off the Track IR box and left Freetrack checked...( Do I need the TrackIR box ticked for this to work in compatable games..???

Will let you know how things go...

Thanks

Laurie

Well that turned out to be alot easier than I had expected...the IR filter on this webcam is a screw in fitting on top of the sensor itself....I just had to carefully use small pliers to unscrew it and voila!!!!....

I have uploaded photos to the Picassa link as above (sorry I havent figured out how this board uploads photos into a thread...)....

I think it is an excellent piece of design by Microsoft for this hardware btw...compliments to them!!)....

Now to testing again....with the headset...

Thanks

Laurie

BTW Dewey I used to visit Wisconsin back in the 80's for the EAA show at Oshkosh...many good memories of your state...

Well....it looks like I need to fit the "exposed camera film filter" or one of the screw on type 35mm IR filters so the webcam will only see any IR light....it appears to be getting drowned out by visible light....

Another step forward though...

Its too late to get one now here 1635, so will need to wait till tomorrow...

Found some Kodak 400 film that had been exposed etc....tried that but all I can get is a spot light like speckle effect from the headset or the TV controller....a bit like a dancing bunch of stars and with 3 or so cross hairs in the lot......adding another strip didnt seem to improve things at all..

I have tried using the Threshold slider but it is to sensitive...

BTW I have also sanded the ends of the LED's off...which made me wonder if that is the problem...???

Not sure what to try now...

Any ideas..??

Regards

Laurie

Hi Laurie;
I also visited EAA in late 80's. I am located about 16 miles North of Wittman Field.

Now that you have some experience building and wiring, here is a suggestion.
Save yourself the frustration of using those IR LEds. Get the SH485P.

Refer to link I posted earlier or check here for pricing and shipping to your location.

http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=475-1470-ND

Type in 475-1470-ND in your DigiKey search.
That is their part number for the Osram SH485P.

Select country in upper right corner.
Digikey is located in Thief River Falls Minnesota.

Order 10 for a price break and to justify shipping.

Hi Dewey,

Than ks...that's what I suspected I should be doing...checked out the Aussie company (Thanks) and it would be about NZD25.00 including delivery for early next week. They send it from Australia....That would push my total up to about NZD70.00

I found the FacetracknoIR  while looking for more info on Ftreetracker builds...and will try that out first. As this would save money and time etc.... I will have to get the IR filter back in..

Darn lost my wordy reply...

In short I have tried out FacetracknoIR and have it working well with a new MS Lifecam HD5000. I did have to chase up "curve settings from a tutorial in English I found on YouTube......for FSX.....its running rather well now.....Rgds...Laurie

I want to also thank Dewy and Steph for their help in trying to get my headset going...

What I have learned is...

1/ Use the recommended IR LED's as they have the broad viewing angle
2/ Dont try sanding LED's till you have first tried them "as is" with the webcams IR filter removed...I did it 1st before removing the IR filter and found I was getting sparkles instead of  LED points...

Regards

Laurie

BTW the IR filter was ok to fit back on the cam but the focus is blurred now...
