I have read some discussions that it is not necessary to modify the Microsoft Lifecam VX-3000 to use it with a tracking system, because you can modify the camera settings in software to make it work.
I built my 3-point cap in two evenings, and I can see the lights with the webcam unmodified. They do not stand out exceptionally, but they are definitely on when the cap is plugged in.
I used Radioshack IR LEDs 5mm, high output, 1.2V/100mA. I ran them all in series with a 10 ohm resistor, powered by an old cell phone 5V wall wart.

If your setup works in games without any lag and stutter then I would say that you don't need to remove the IR filter. It is all heavily dependent on a lot of things, brightness in your room, how configurable is the webcam software, the quality of the webcam itself, how bright the LEDs burn and try to remove other sources that emit a lot of IR light.
