I have recently bought 10 sfh485p leds from Seeedstudio and some 1/4W 22 ohm 5% Carbon Comp Resistors.  My plan is to use USB to power the leds.

So now I have it all wired up, but when I plug it in I don't see any light from the headset and the wii remote is not picking up any light source as well.

I need some guidance here on how to troubleshoot this. Is there a quick and dirty setup I can use just to test if I can get one LED to light and be recognized?

Don't really know how experienced you are with electronics in general, so I'll just make the easy point: Are you sure the Flat side (with the shorter lead) is going to the negative on your power source?

Also, unrelated to your problem, but in general as well: Did you make sure to fuse your connection so you don't have the potential to fry your motherboard?

Well I consider myself fairly inexperienced.  Yes, I verified the positive and negative leads before I made my connections.

No I hadn't fused my USB connection.  I was saving that for last after I had everything else working.

For now I would be happy just to get one LED working in any power/wiring configuration.

Generally the longer lead goes to positive, but the Osram SFH485P is different:

the longer lead goes to negative (cathode). It is on the flat side.

A quick test if your led is working, use your digital camera / preview screen.

A quick test if your Wii / Freetrack is working with IR-led, use a remote control, point it at your Wiimote and press a button and move it. Select one point model in Freetrack.

Thanks benmeijer testing with the digital camera worked great.

I now have a working model and want to incorporate the PTC fuse in my USB cable.  But I am not sure how exactly it should be connected.  To me it makes sense to put it in line on the negative side. Can anyone provide some guidance?
