I am building my own clip, as professionally as I can. I'm ordering 6 SFH 485 P (in case i mess up :D) off of digikey (unless any of you suggest otherwise) and will be powering the setup using a AAA battery. If i Want to set up the circuit in series, what resistor should i use. I'm really looking forward to this, all help is GREATLY appreciated.

hello servili007 , and welcome.

You said you wat to power your setting with AAA batteries, that's ok if you use at least 2 of them (that's 3v if using classic batteries or 2.4v if using NiCad or Nimh rechargeable batteries).

If you use only 1 battery, the power supply voltage will be too low for the led to operate properly.

Just tell how much batteries you plan to use , and if you plan to mod your webcam or let it unmodded, and i'll be glad to help.

Off line Www

you won't be able to use a single aaa to power 3 485p's in a series. they operate at a foward current of 1.5 volts. A series circuit will need 4.5 volts. Your best bet is 2 aaa's with a parallel circuit using 51 ohms resistors. A resistor for each led. Thats just off the top of my head, but you can use the led wizard to verify that.

my cam is a creative NX with filter removed and floppy disk layer over it. If i can't work out 1 AAA, what setup would i need to run it using USB?

Hello servili007

Since your webcam is IR modded, you won't use much current.

Lets say we'll power your leds at about 30mA.

If you use a 3v setup (2x batteries) :
Parallel setup, using 3x 51 ohms resistors.

If you use an USB powered setup :
Serial setup, using a 18 ohms resistor.

I usually don't recommend using USB power for the following reasons :
- If you make an error in building your setup, you can easily fry your USB ports on your PC motherboard.
- To correctly protect your motherboard , you should add a PTC fuse in your setup. Most people have problems finding them.

Finished! i ran to radioshack instead and bought 3 IR Leds and set em up using a USB cable, im pretty proficient in electronics just needed to refresh, anyway its working pretty good but it seems like this cam needs more than 30 mA cause its seems to break up the blobs too fast, any correction for this?

also, i have a wiimote that im waiting to use 2.2 with :D, will this current setup work perfectly with it?

Hello Servili007

using a USB cable

Your choice. Just be careful and don't make mistakes , ok ?

it seems like this cam needs more than 30 mA

Nope.
The Radioshacks leds are 29mA Leds (if my memory doesn't fail), so about 30 mA is their max power.

Try to play with your LV filter (removing the floppy and putting a piece of radiographic sheet instead).

its seems to break up the blobs

      Sorry I don't understand this sentence (I'm french), can you explain please ?  :inn:  thank you.

well these LEDS are rated 100 max, the usb wiring is all good as i've been testing it and the finished product works fine :)

by blobs i mean the lights become so dim that  the program reads it as more than 1 light.

edit- i removed my floppy disk filter and now it works perfect! so happy :D
